Bible (ABeka Curriculum)

Story cards are used to cover both the Old and New Testaments.  Students have a Bible activity book in which they color, cut and glue their way through each story as a way to reinforce the lessons learned through the Bible.  As the year progresses, students are given memory verses to practice at school and at home.  By the third quarter the students are tested each Friday on a weekly verse.  Wednesdays are GVCS Chapel where the students worship and hear from the Word of God.

Phonics and Handwriting (ABeka Curriculum)

Students begin the year reviewing their letters and sounds.  They are taught proper stroke order for both capital and lower case letters.  Handwriting is practiced daily and begins with letters then soon builds to words, phrases, and sentences. In Phonics, students quickly move into phonetic blends and word building, first with short vowel words and then long vowel.  Special sounds are introduced to increase reading fluency in the middle of the year.  By the end of the school year students will be able to mark short and long vowels, recognized beginning and ending sounds in a word, recognize special sounds in a word, and use their phonics skills to decode new words.  We also practice rhyming, matching a phrase to a picture, and sentence structure.

Reading (Abeka Book Curriculum and Sam Book Series)

Our reading program begins before the first quarter ends in kindergarten.  We begin with a sight word based whole language program called Sam Books.  Students develop confidence in reading while exploring the world of Sam the Lion and all of his friends.  We also use the “I can read” phonetic based reading program in combination with the Sam Books.  These ABeka readers begin with short vowel words and move into long vowel words as well as words containing special sounds.  Towards the end of the series students are also exposed to compound words.  The books are read orally in class.

Friday Learning Stations

Each Friday morning the students participate in learning stations where they get the chance to reinforce the material learned throughout the week through hands on, fun activities.  With the help of parent volunteers the students rotate through the stations, spending 15-20 minutes engaged in the activity.  Stations include: writing with shaving cream, phonics games, class store, painting with marbles, and much, much more!

Evaluations

Students are given written and oral evaluations throughout the week in all subjects to determine their progress and retention of the material presented in class.  They are given a score which is posted on our school’s online grading program.  These scores determine their grade in each subject.  The grading scale is as follows:

E - Excellent
G - Good
S – Satisfactory
NI – Needs Improvement
U – Unsatisfactory
